Q: What is Expression of Hope?

A: Expression of Hope is a global program of goodwill and awareness featuring works of art by the community touched by the rare genetic conditions of lysosomal storage disorders. Selected artwork will be displayed at various events around the world where others in the community can view it. In addition, the majority of submissions will be posted on the web where they’ll be accessible to the broader community. The works of art are meant to express the subject’s feelings of hope and be an expression of the human spirit of the person living with an LSD.

Q: Who is sponsoring Expression of Hope?

A: Expression of Hope is brought to you by Genzyme in collaboration with patient organizations around the world.

Q: Why submit artwork to the Expression of Hope program?

A: Individuals who participate in the program will realize the following benefits:

Have their work posted on the Expression of Hope website

Receive the Expression of Hope book

Potentially have their work included in the traveling exhibit

Potentially share the experience by interacting with others at an Expression of Hope exhibit

Q: How do I enter my artwork?

A: The submission period has closed.

Q: How will pieces be selected to be part of the traveling Expression of Hope art show?

A: A panel will select works based on the technical and emotive quality of the art along with its ability to infuse the viewer with insight and appreciation of the hope and spirit of the person portrayed.

Q: Who will select the featured pieces of art?

A: The panel will be comprised of a panel of experts from the Massachusetts College of Art, based in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

Q: How many pieces will be selected to be part of the traveling art show?

A: It is anticipated that 15 – 20 pieces will be selected to be part of the traveling art show. All submissions that meet program guidelines will be posted on the Expression of Hope website. In addition to the submitted art selected for the traveling show, other pieces representing individuals living with LSDs and created by artists from the Massachusetts College of Art will be displayed as part of the exhibit and in the online Expression of Hope Gallery.

Q: What if I have an idea but can’t physically execute it?

A: A caregiver or friend can create the art on your behalf.

Q: Can artwork be entered that is already created?

A: Yes, as long as it meets the program guidelines.

Q: What are the program guidelines?

A: Works should express the artist/subject’s feelings of hope and should be an expression of the human spirit of the person living with an LSD

Artwork must be two dimensional and may include paintings, etchings, charcoal, mixed media, photographs

The artwork should be unframed, on paper or canvas, and be between 16” x 24” and 20” x 30”

Submission forms and photographs of art must be received on or before March 31, 2006

Q: How old do people need to be in order to participate?

A: Anyone can enter, however those under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian review and sign all correspondence.

Q: How will I know if my artwork is selected? How will I be contacted?

A: If your artwork is selected to be featured, you will receive a letter with instructions on next steps and Expression of Hope may contact you at the telephone number you provide.
